The installation aims to interpret the transition where a long-used space becomes a physical, emotional, and cultural reflection of its people and how these spaces also influence the internal strata of experiences within the people. Mok yok tang directly translates to ‘bathing pools’. Naked, vulnerable, people gather together to silently pour out a river of emotions within the ritual of bathing. These stories are not lost but instead are written in steam and water - invisible engravings on the tiles themselves. The Korean public bath is a physical manifestation of its visitors, a place of ritual where one’s belonging is unquestioned. The word minhwa directly translates to ‘the people’s paintings’. Proliferated during the Korean Chosun Dynasty, min hwa were often created by untrained wandering painters to be hung in kitchens, bedrooms, and doorways in the hopes that they would offer the family protection and bring about good fortune. The focus of these paintings were immensely diverse, featuring animals, plants, books, landscapes and other elements that held fundamental significance to the common folk. There was a heavy focus on maintaining the visual equilibrium within the framework of each rendition; perhaps in reflection of the importance these people placed on stability and custom. These three dimensional permutations are a reflection of the ever-changing symbology within min hwa, adding to the existing strata of interpretations with its genesis. The process of reinterpreting the visual framework of min hwa traces the artist’s process of attempting to understand their own position in the gyopo diaspora. The term itself carries negative connotations as referring to people who, as a result of living outside the motherland, have been severed from their Korean roots. Expatriation itself was a rising trend in South Korea in the late 90s and early 2000s, as more and more families chose to leave in order to pursue opportunities for wealth and education outside the country. In the late 1990s, South Korea became the fifth-largest source of immigrants to Canada. North America was hugely idealized and was seen as the new horizon in the journey toward open doors and opportunities. The Aberrant questions the effect of expatriation in Korean-Canadian gyopos, and the deafening loneliness produced by the conflict between the culture one is born into versus the newly adopted. Having to lead a life of duality of two names, two cultures, and two homes, the piece hopes to express the balancing act that gyopos must struggle to reconcile with. People would stream their broadcast live online while eating in front of a table. This was done to create a sense of familiarity and companionship so that those viewing the broadcast could eat at their tables on the other side of the screen, creating an illusion that these two people in two different locations are eating together. Since then, mokbang has gained popularity globally and continues to foster a sense of sharing, companionship, and togetherness.
